Transparency rules are now enforceable. For most SMEs, the challenge is mainly about documentation.
The European AI Regulation (EU 2024/1689) entered full application on 2 August 2026 for high-risk systems and transparency obligations.
For the vast majority of SMEs, which use AI through off-the-shelf tools, obligations remain manageable: list AI uses, inform people when AI is involved, and keep human oversight over sensitive decisions. Common sales uses (transcription, writing, meeting preparation) are not considered high-risk.
Fewer than 30% of European SMEs had started a compliance process by spring 2026. A simple map of AI uses is the right starting point.
